Production drops in Costa Rica

Production barely grew by 2.6% in comparison to the same month last year, the Central Bank indicated yesterday.

This is the lowest interannual growth (for each month in comparison to the same month in the previous year) that has been recorded since March 2002; this confirms a slow-down that started last year.

Although, extending comparison periods shows a slowdown compared to the annual growth in July, August and September, when the indicator showed 4.3%, 4.1% and 3.1% respectively.

The latest results of the Monthly Index of Economic Activity as of November 2008 indicates a variation of -0.5% in the last 12 months.

According to "this is the first drop in the interannual variation (for each month compared to the same month in the previous year) for the Index since July 2001.

Pace of economic growth slows in Costa Rica

The latest official data point to a mild slowdown in Costa Rica's economic growth.

The Monthly Index of Economic Activity in March (the last month for which information is available) was 6.5 percent, down from 6.8% in the same month last year.
The central bank's preliminary figures for the first quarter provide mixed signals on the near-term development of the economy.
