Private Pharmacies Closed for Participating in Strike

In Nicaragua, the Ortega administration ordered the closure of five of the 38 branches operated by the Medco pharmacy chain for having joined the national strike on May 23.

The order to cease operations of the five branches was notified through the Ministry of Health, however, the company will appeal the decision of the authorities.

Laprensa.com.ni review that representatives of the company reported that "... five closed, we imagine that you handle what the Silais did, the government, for the day of the strike, but we are on appeal, we can not say they are officially closed.

The article adds that "... Since last week began the closures in pharmacies that joined the strike, with only a notification card of the Local System of Integrated Health Care (Silais). The letters of notification are issued by the director of the Silais of the locality where the medical businesses are located, through which the definitive closing of the pharmacy is ordered and the sanitary license to operate the business is abolished."

Regarding the importation of medicines in the region, reports from CentralAmericaData state that during 2018 the main purchaser of pharmaceutical products in Central America was Costa Rica, with $777 million, followed by Guatemala, with $656 million, Panama, with $620 million, Honduras, with $500 million, Nicaragua, with $375 million and El Salvador, with $364 million.
