Price of Imported Fertilizers Continues to Fall

The average price per kilo of fertilizers imported by the Central American countries dropped from $0.54 in January 2012 to $0.27 in March 2018, registering a 50% drop.

Variation of regional imports 
Between the first quarter of 2017 and the same period in 2018, the volume of imported fertilizers registered an increase of 7%, rising from 542,000 tons to 580,000 tons.

For the periods in question, the import value registered an increase of 10%, rising from $161 million in 2017 to $177 million in 2018.

Imports by country 
From January to March 2018 the main importer of fertilizers in Central America was Guatemala with $69 million, followed by Honduras, with $35 million, Costa Rica, with $34 million, El Salvador with $19 million, Nicaragua with $11 million and Panama, with $9 million.

Origin of imports 
In the first quarter of the year, 20% of the value imported from Central America came from China, 14% from Russia, 11% from Mexico and 10% from Latvia.
