Price of Imported Corn Drops 56%

Between February 2013 and December 2017, the average price of a kilo of corn imported into Guatemala has been on a downward path, falling from $0.43 to $0.19.

Price of imports 
During the months between January 2012 and December 2017, the average price per kilo of imports in Guatemala ranged between $0.43 and $0.19 per kilo. In the 6 years from 2012 to 2017 the price has been on a downward trend, having a price of $0.30 per kilo in January 2012 and a price of $0.19 per kilo in December 2017, equivalent to a fall of 56%.

Changes in imports 
Between the first nine months of 2016 and 2017, the total import volume of corn in Guatemala went down by 2%, falling from 803,000 tons in 2016 to 79,000 tons in 2017. For the periods in question, the import value also decreased, going down from $169 million to $163 million, which is equivalent to a 4% drop.  

Origin of imports 
From January to September 2017, 98% of the volume imported by Guatemala came from the USA, 1% from Mexico and 1% from Belize.

February 2019

Between January and June 2018, maize imports from countries in the region totaled $380 million, and 51% were bought by companies in Guatemala and Costa Rica.

October 2018

Corn imports from the countries of the region reached $168 million between January and March of this year, 6% more than what was reported in the same period of 2017.
