Presidents of the Region to meet with Joe Biden

The vice president of the United States will meet with isthmus leaders during his visit to Costa Rica on March 29 and 30.

The Costa Rican president, Oscar Arias, summoned his counterparts from El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua and Panama. He announced that he will also invite the prime minister of Belize and the winner of next Sunday’s presidential elections in El Salvador.

According to AFP (American Free Press,) "Arias wants the agenda with the United States to include issues which are a priority for Central America such as health, education and environmental protection, in addition to drug trafficking and immigration which are what concern Washington most.”

In Central America, Antonio Saca is first (66%), followed by Oscar Arias (49%), Martín Torrijos (48%), Álvaro Colom (45%), Daniel Ortega (38%), Manuel Zelaya (25%).

A ranking by Consulta Mitofsky compares the approval ratings of 18 presidents of the Americas, led by Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva with a 70% approval rating, followed by Alvaro Uribe of Colombia (69%), and Felipe Calderón of Mexico (68%).

The vice president of the United States is preparing an official visit to Costa Rica for March 29 and 30.

The visit would be a continuation of the official's participation in a meeting of leaders in Chile, scheduled for March 27 and 28.

This would be the first official visit to Latin America by an official from the Obama administration.

Plan Puebla Panama and Integration to be discussed at presidential meetings

The presidents of the region have back-to-back meetings today in El Salvador and tomorrow in Mexico, to discuss regional integration and the re-starting of the Plan Puebla Panama.

Presidents from Central America, Mexico and Colombia will meet Saturday in the Mexican city of Villahermosa, where the theme will be Plan Puebla Panama.
