President Colom fires Guatemala's attorney general

Guatemala's president, Álvaro Colom, today fired Attorney General Mario Gordillo and in his place appointed lawyer Baudilio Portillo Merlos.

According to a government source, Gordillo was relieved of his position for "poor performance and negligence in the fulfillment of his obligations."

Guatemala presents measures to rein in prices rises

Alvaro Colom, the Guatemalan president, announced measures to soften the blow of increases in fuel and food prices.

Colom said the increases had given his government little room for maneuver but he said he would seek accords with industry to keep their prices under control. Producers of vegetable oil, flour and chicken have already agreed to back the measures.

New Economy Minister appointed in Guatemala

Guatemalan President Álvaro Colom has appointed Rómulo Alfredo Caballeros as Economy Minister. The post had been vacant for 43 days.

Previously, Caballeros had positions in the Economic Commission for Latin America, and in Guatemala's General Planning Secretariat and the foreign ministry.

Colom meets with Bush

U.S. President George W. Bush will receive his counterpart from Guatemala, Álvaro Colom, next Monday when he is in Washington for a three'day official visit.

Official sources say the agenda will be very broad, and will include themes like the anti-drug battle, the oil crisis, immigration and trade.

Insecurity an urgent issue in Guatemala

As Älvaro Colom completes his first 100 days as Guatemala's president, combating insecurity remains an urgent issue for the new government.

The plan drawn up by authorities aims to reduce violence and take control in the so-called red zones and the territories used by organized crime to transport drugs, arms, and people.
