Plastics: Regional Purchases Increase by 7%

As a result of increases in purchases from companies in the U.S., Mexico and China, between the first quarter of 2018 and the same period in 2019, imports of plastic and its manufactures in Central America grew 7%.

Costa Rican Companies, Main Buyers
In the first three months of 2019, the main importer of plastic and its manufactures in Central America continued to be Costa Rica, with $352 million, followed by Guatemala, with $222 million, El Salvador, with $161 million, Honduras, with $128 million, Panama, with $105 million and Nicaragua, with $52 million.

Regional Business Upwards
Between January and March 2018 and the same period in 2019, the value imported into Central America grew 7%, from $950 million to $1,019 million.

The increase registered in the first quarter of 2019 represents an upward confirmation of the business, since in the same period of 2017 and 2018, year-on-year increases of 7% and 1%, respectively, were reported.

Origin of Regional Imports
During the first quarter of the year, 36% of the value imported by Central America came from the U.S., 12% from China, 9% from Mexico, 3% from Taiwan and 3% from Colombia.

China is the market of origin of purchases that has grown the most in the first quarter of the last eight years, since in 2012 represented 5% of the total value of regional purchases, and in 2019 the proportion rose to 12%.

Because of increases in purchases from companies in Mexico, China and Taiwan between the first half of 2017 and the same period in 2018, imports of plastic and its manufactures in the region up 6%.

Plastic: More Trade between El Salvador and Mexico

In the first quarter of the year the Central American country imported $20 million worth of plastic and its manufactures from Mexico, 26% more than in the same period in 2017.
