Plastic and Packaging: What Products Have Gained Ground?

As a result of the pandemic that generated the spread of covid-19, during 2020 there were changes in consumption patterns, a phenomenon that forced the plastics industry to adapt to the new reality.

Due to the severe quarantine decreed in Guatemala, the restaurant sector was one of the most affected and demand for this type of product decreased. This decline was mitigated by the rise in sales of supermarkets, establishments that increased the consumption of plastic materials and packaging.

Prensalibre.com reviews that "... For example, one of the winning products during the pandemic is the vacuum packaging, -it is a system that better preserves the perishable food of high sweeping-, and they have made several developments to manufacture this article that is sold in supermarkets and in shelves."

The article adds that "... Another product that gained relevance in agriculture was the films for the harvest of some of the grains for export. The films have a protection against UV rays, and its function is to generate microclimates. Also, a resin dedicated to mass consumption gained momentum and yields more, that is, for each kilo of material it produces more bags than a conventional one, and in the end it helps to reduce the cost differential from traditional plastic to a compostable, biodegradable or bio-based one."

Gabriel Salazar, founder and general manager of Bioorganic, a company dedicated to the production of packaging from alternative bio-based materials, believes that in this context of changing habits, consumers increasingly value products that are sold in environmentally sustainable packaging.

Businessmen in the sector agree that these changes in people's preferences will generate new business opportunities in the coming months.
