Costa Rican Companies, Main Buyers
During 2020 the main buyer of plastic pipe and fittings in Central America was Costa Rica, with $171.6 million, followed by Honduras with $49.2 million, Guatemala with $45.8 million, Panama with $29.9 million, El Salvador with $28.2 million and finally Nicaragua with $22.5 million.

For 2020, Guatemalan companies were the only ones in the region that increased their imports year-on-year, with a variation of 19.57%. 

Regional purchases on the decline
In 2020, the value of imports in Central America registered a decrease of 31.04%, going from $373.7 million to $257.7 million.

In contrast to the general behavior of imports, purchases from companies in the United States were the largest distributors, accounting for 42.39% of the market, equivalent to $109.2 million.

Origin of imports
In 2020, 42.39% of the value imported from Central America came from the U.S., followed by Costa Rica with 11.67%, Mexico with 10.25% and Guatemala with 9.64%.

The U.S. is the market of origin of imports that has grown the most by 2020, since in 2012 it represented 33.28% of regional purchases and in 2020 the proportion reached 42.39%.

During 2018, Central American countries imported $355 million in plastic pipe and fittings, and purchases from Mexican companies grew 10% and U.S. companies 2%, compared to 2017.

June 2018

In 2017, Central American countries imported $366 million worth of plastic pipes and accessories, 11% more than what was reported in 2016.
