Plastic Pipe: Business with the U.S. Upwards

From January to March of this year, Central American countries imported $96 million in plastic pipe and accessories, and purchases from U.S. companies increased by 3%, when compared to the same period in 2019.

Costa Rican Companies, Main Buyers
In the first three months of 2020 the main buyer of plastic pipe and its accessories in Central America was Costa Rica, with $50 million, followed by Guatemala, with $12 million, Honduras, with $11 million, Panama, with $9 million, El Salvador, with $8 million and Nicaragua, with $6 million.

For the quarter in question, Guatemalan, Salvadoran and Honduran companies increased their imports by 32%, 14% and 6%, respectively.

In the case of Nicaraguan and Panamanian companies, purchases decreased by 16% and 37%, respectively. In the Costa Rican market, no significant variations were reported.

Regional Purchases Downwards
Between the first quarter of 2019 and the same period of 2020, the value imported into Central America registered a 2% decrease, from $97 million to $96 million.

In contrast to the general behavior of imports, purchases from companies in the U.S. increased from $43.3 million to $44.3 million.

Origin of Imports
From January to March of this year, 46% of the value imported from Central America came from the United States, 9% from Mexico, 3% from China, 2% from Colombia and 2% from Germany.

The U.S. is the market of origin of imports that has grown the most in the first quarter of the last eight years, since in 2012 it represented 30% of regional purchases and this year the proportion reached 46%.
