Plastic: More Trade between El Salvador and Mexico

In the first quarter of the year the Central American country imported $20 million worth of plastic and its manufactures from Mexico, 26% more than in the same period in 2017.

Variation of imports  
Between the first three months of 2017 and the same period in 2018 the value of plastic imported into El Salvador decreased from $156 million to $144 million, which represents a decrease of 8%. 

For the periods in question, the value imported from Mexico grew by 26%, going from $16 million to $20 million, and from China it grew by 23%, going from $18 million to $22 million.

Origin of imports 
During the first quarter of 2018, 25% of the value imported from El Salvador came from the USA, 16% from China, 14% from Mexico, 12% from Guatemala and 6% from Taiwan. 

China is the market of origin of imports that has grown the most in the first quarter of the last seven years. In 2012 it represented 3% of the total import value, and this year the figure reached 16%.

Because of increases in purchases from companies in Mexico, China and Taiwan between the first half of 2017 and the same period in 2018, imports of plastic and its manufactures in the region up 6%.

Last year, the region bought $3.874 million worth of plastic and manufactured goods from abroad, 6% more than in 2016, and 35% of imports came from the United States.
