Pineapple: Sales to Spain Increase to 12%

In the first three months of 2019, Central American countries exported $251 million worth of pineapple, and sales to Spanish companies increased 12% over the same period in 2018.

Variation in Regional Business
Between January and March 2018 and the same period of 2019, the exported volume of pineapple registered a 4% decrease, falling from 603 thousand tons to 576 thousand tons.

For the periods concerned, the value exported to Spain increased, in this case the increase was 4% from $16.6 million in 2018 to $18.5 million in 2019.

Costa Rica, Main Seller
In the first quarter of 2019 the main exporter of pineapple in Central America continued to be by far Costa Rica, with $235 million, followed by Guatemala, with $7 million, Honduras, with $6 million, Panama, with $3 million, and Nicaragua and El Salvador did not report significant sales abroad.

Main Buyers
From January to March 2018, 47% of the value exported from Central America went to the U.S., 15% to the Netherlands, 7% to Italy, 7% to Spain and 6% to Belgium.

Price of Exports
Between January 2012 and September 2018, the average price per kilo of pineapple exports by countries in the region ranged from $0.39 to $0.47.

Watermelon Exports Up 20%

August 2018

During the first three months of the year countries in Central America sold $52 million worth of watermelons abroad, which is 20% more than what was exported in the same period in 2017.

In the first quarter of the year, countries in the region exported $261 million worth of pineapples, 18% more than in the same period in 2017, mainly explained by sales to the United States and the Netherlands.
