Pilot Strike Grounds Spirit Airlines

All the flights of the discount airline Spirit are cancelled, at least until June 17; its pilots demand a 30% wage increase.

Spirit has regular flights linking Fort Lauderdale with several Central American airports: Guatemala City, San Pedro Sula, Managua, San José and Panama.

The company’s business model is based on low labor costs, and has spent the last three years dealing with complaints from the union. After a week of negotiations, the union left the table and began a preannounced strike.

Spirit Airlines Resumes Flights

Spirit’s pilots went back to work; the company will resume operations on Friday 18.

The pilots of the airline, together with the International Pilot’s Association (ALPA) announced that they’ve reached a tentative agreement with the company.

The new contract, unanimously recommended by the pilot’s union, must still be ratified by ALPA.

Spirit Airlines Increases Flight Frequency to Costa Rica

As of July 19, there will be two daily flights that the company will conduct between Fort Lauderdale, Florida, and San Jose, Costa Rica.

The airline began flights to Costa Rica in April 2007, using aircraft with a capacity for 145 passengers.

Nación published the statements of Michael Crosgrove, reservations manager for the airline, on its website: "The success achieved in the last two years influenced the decision to increase the frequency of flights to the country. Before we arrived, ticket cost for flights to the US were higher. We entered the competition and airlines lowered prices."
