Philippine Banana Exports Increase

The increase in sales of fruit, mostly to Asia, has been attributed to a combination of an increase in the export volume and a price hike.

From a statement issued by the Costa Rican Foreign Trade Promotion Office (Procomer):

The Davao region has recorded a total of $356 million in banana exports in the second quarter of this year, an increase of over 50% compared to the same period last year, when $237 million was generated, according data released by the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) in Davao.

Data from PSA-Davao also shows an increase of 532% in the net weight of bananas exported. The export volume amounted to 5,360 million kilos in the second quarter of this year, u from the 849 million recorded in the same period in 2013.

"The increase in value of exports in the second quarter of 2014, compared to 2013, is a combination of increased banana volume and an increase in the purchase price," explained Remegio García, president of the Association of Producers and Banana Exporters in Mindanao.

More Competition in Banana Sales to U.S.
