Pharmaceuticals: Regional Business Keeps Rising

Costa Rican Companies: Main Buyers
From January to September 2018, the main purchaser of pharmaceutical products in Central America was Costa Rica with $573 million, followed by Guatemala with $473 million, Panama with $439 million, Honduras with $378 million, Nicaragua with $287 million and El Salvador with $269 million.

Regional Business Upwards
Between the first nine months of 2017 and the same period of 2018, the value imported of pharmaceutical products in Central America registered a positive variation, since it increased from $2,334 million to $2,418 million.

For the periods concerned, purchases from Spain grew 11%, from $102 million to $113 million, and imports from India increased 36%, from $99 million to $134 million.

U.S. and Mexico: Top Suppliers
Between January and September 2018, 9% of the value imported from Central America was from the U.S., 9% from Mexico, 8% from Germany, 6% from India and 5% from Spain.

Germany is the country of origin of Central American imports that has grown the most in the first nine months of the last seven years, since in 2012 represented 4% of the total value purchased, and by 2018 increased to 8%.

In the first nine months of 2018, purchases of vaccines for human use in Central America totaled $99 million, and imports from India grew 72% over the same period in 2017.
