Pharmaceuticals: Purchases Exceed $2.6 Billion

From January to September 2020, Central American imports of pharmaceutical products totaled $2.625 billion, an amount that exceeds by just 0.4% what was reported in the same period of 2019.

Costa Rican Companies: Main Buyers
From January to September 2020 the main buyer of pharmaceutical products in Central America was Costa Rica, with $633 million, followed by Guatemala, with $503 million, Panama, with $464 million, Honduras, with $390 million, El Salvador, with $339 million and Nicaragua, with $296 million.

Regarding the year-on-year variation of purchases abroad, for the period in question, Nicaragua reported a 10% increase, followed by Costa Rica, with 4%, and Guatemala and Honduras, with 3% each.

El Salvador and Panama were the markets in the region that recorded negative variations, which amounted to -2% and -12%, in that order.

Slight Decline in Regional Business
Between the first nine months of 2019 and the same period of 2020, the imported value of pharmaceutical products in Central America registered a slight positive variation, going from $2,614 million to $2,625 million.

For the periods in question, regional purchases from Spain increased by 13%, from $124 million to $140 million, and imports from Mexico increased by 2%, from $220 million to $226 million.

Germany and Mexico: Main Suppliers
Between January and September of last year, 9% of the value of imports from Central America came from Germany, 9% from Mexico, 8% from the USA, 5% from Spain, 5% from India and 4% from Switzerland.

Germany is the country of origin of Central American imports that has grown the most in the period in question in recent years, since in 2012 it represented 4% of the total value purchased, and in 2020 it rose to 9%.
