Pharmaceuticals: Increase in Regional Purchases

For the second quarter of 2021, the purchase of pharmaceutical products in the region was dominated by Costa Rica with $428 million, the largest supplier to the region was Germany with $167 million.

Costa Rican Companies: Main Buyers
From January to June 2021, the main buyer of pharmaceutical products in Central America was Costa Rica with $427.7 million, followed by Guatemala with $326.3 million, Panama with $305.9 million, Honduras with $246.3 million, El Salvador with $207.8 million and Nicaragua with $192.7 million.

Regarding the year-on-year variation of purchases abroad, for the period in question Central America reported an increase, El Salvador with 35.69%, followed by Honduras with 22.22%, Guatemala with 9.29%, Panama with 8.23%, Nicaragua with 4.21% and Costa Rica with 2.28%.

Growth in Regional Business
Between the first six months of 2020 and the same period of 2021, the imported value of pharmaceutical products in Central America registered a positive variation of 11.37%, increasing from $1,717.2 million to $1,909.1 million.

In contrast to the upward trend in imports in general, for the periods in question, regional purchases from the United States fell by 6.26%, from $142.2 million to $133.3 million.

Germany and Mexico: Main Suppliers
Between January and June of this year, 8.75% of the value imported from Central America came from Germany, 8.12% from Mexico, 7.51% from Panama, 6.98% from the U.S.A. and 6.45% from India.

Germany is the country of origin of Central American imports that has grown the most in the period in question over the last eight years, since in 2012 it represented 4.08% of the total value purchased and in June 2021 it rose to 8.75%.
