In 2020, Costa Rica was the largest importer of pet food with a value of $41.7 million, in addition, the United States was the largest supplier of this category in Central America with a $61.4 million share.

Costa Rica and Panama: Main Buyers in the Region
During 2020, the main importer of retail packaged dog and cat food in Central America was Costa Rica with $41.7 million, followed by Panama with $40.3 million, El Salvador with $26.9 million, Guatemala with $26.2 million, Honduras with $19.8 million and Nicaragua with $16.5 million.
For the year under analysis, purchases from all Central American markets increased in year-on-year terms.

Costa Rica increased its purchases by 33.22%, El Salvador by 24.42%, Honduras by 20.25%, Guatemala by 12.06%, Nicaragua by 10.39% and Panama by 9.51%.

Variations in Central American Business
Between 2019 and 2020, the imported volume of dog and cat food preparations registered an increase of 11.55%, going from 189.359 thousand tons to 211.226 thousand tons. In the case of the imported value, it grew 13.63%, going from $200.9 million to $228.3 million.

For the periods in question, the value imported from Mexico increased 24.06%, growing from $44.3 million to $54.9 million.

U.S. Main Supplier
During 2020, 26.89% of the value imported from Central America came from the U.S., 24.06% from Mexico, 20.74% from Honduras, followed by Guatemala with 12.47%, El Salvador with 4.57% and Costa Rica with 4.26%.

Mexico is the market of origin of imports that has grown the most for the months in question in recent years, since in 2012 it represented 21.28% of total purchases from Central America and in 2020 that proportion rose to 24.06%.

From January to March 2019, companies from countries in the region imported $47 million in food for dogs and cats, 12% more than was reported in the same period in 2018.

Animal Feed Imports from the USA Up 9%

In 2016, the value of Central American imports of animal feed from the United States totaled $95 million, 9% more than in 2015.
