From January to September 2019, companies in the region imported $144 million in dog and cat food, and purchases from Mexican companies increased 4% over the same period in 2018.

Panama and Costa Rica: Main buyers in the region
During the first nine months of last year, the main importer of retail-conditioned dog and cat food in Central America was Panama, with $37 million, followed by Costa Rica, with $31 million, Guatemala, with $23 million, El Salvador, with $22 million, Honduras, with $17 million, and Nicaragua, with $15 million.

Variations in Central American Business
Between January and September 2018 and the same period in 2019, the volume imported for dog and cat food preparations registered a 3% drop, from 141,000 tons to 137,000 tons. In the case of imported value, it grew from $142 million to $144 million.

For the periods in question, the value imported from Mexico increased 14%, growing from $31 million to $32 million.

U.S. Main Supplier
During the first nine months of last year, 30% of the value imported from Central America came from the USA, 22% from Mexico, 2% from France and 1% from Brazil.

Mexico is the market of origin of imports that has grown the most for the months in question over the last eight years, since in 2012 represented 20% of total purchases in Central America, and in 2019 that proportion rose to 22%.
