Panama and Costa Rica: Main Buyers in the Region
During the first half of the year, the main importer of dog and cat food prepared for retail in Central America was Panama, with $24 million, followed by Costa Rica, with $20 million, Guatemala, with $16 million, El Salvador, with $15 million, Honduras, with $11 million, and Nicaragua, with $10 million.

Variations in Central American Business
Between the first semester of 2018 and the same period of 2019, the imported volume of food preparations for dogs and cats registered a 3% decrease, going from 91 thousand tons to 88 thousand tons. In the case of imported value, it grew from $91 million to $93 million.

For the periods in question, the value imported from Mexico increased 10%, growing from $19 million to $21 million.

U.S. Main Supplier
During the first six months of the year, 32% of the value imported from Central America came from the U.S., 22% from Mexico, 2% from France and 1% from Brazil.

Mexico is the market origin of imports that has grown the most for the months in question of the last eight years, since in 2012 represented 19% of total purchases in Central America, and in 2019 that proportion rose to 22%.
