Panama is the main buyer in the region
In the first half of 2017, the largest importer of dog and cat food conditioned for retail sale in Central America was Panama, with $22 million, followed by Costa Rica, with $18 million, Guatemala, with $15 million, Honduras, with $14 million, El Salvador, with $13 million, and Nicaragua, with $9 million.

Central American imports upwards
Between January and June 2017 and the same period in 2018, the volume of food preparations imported for dogs and cats registered a 15% increase, rising from 80,000 tons to 91,000 tons. The imported value also increased from $80 million to $92 million.

For the periods concerned, the value imported from the U.S. increased 19%, growing from $27 million to $32 million.

U.S. is the main supplier
During the first six months of 2018, 34% of the value imported from Central America was from the U.S., 21% from Mexico, 1% from France and 1% from Colombia.

The U.S. is the market origin of imports that has grown the most in the first half of the last seven years, as in 2012 represented 30% of total purchases in Central America, and in 2018 that proportion increased to 34%.

From January to March 2019, companies from countries in the region imported $47 million in food for dogs and cats, 12% more than was reported in the same period in 2018.
