Personal Care: Toilet Paper Imports Up 3%

In the first quarter of 2019, Central American imports of toilet paper reached $68 million, an amount 3% higher than that reported for the same period in 2018.

Regional Purchases Still on the Rise
Between the first quarter of 2018 and the same period of 2019, the value of imported toilet paper in Central America registered a 3% increase, growing from $66 million to $68 million.

Costa Rican and Honduran Companies, Main Importers
From January to March of this year, the main buyer was Costa Rica, with $16 million, followed by Honduras, with $15.5 million, Guatemala, with $15 million, Nicaragua, with $11 million, Panama, $6 million, and El Salvador, with $4 million.

Fewer Purchases from Mexico
During the first quarter of 2019, 16% of the value imported into the region came from Mexico, 3% from China, 2% from the U.S. and 1% from Colombia.

Mexico is the market origin of imports that has been reduced most for the period in question of the last eight years, as in 2012 represented 28% of purchases

In the first quarter of 2018, companies in the country imported $173 million worth of paper and cardboard, and purchases in El Salvador totaled $23 million, 8% more than in the same period in 2017.
