Personal Care: Business Opportunities in Jamaica

60% of the beauty and personal care products offered on the island are imported, which added to the intense tourist activity that takes place in the country, lays the foundation for many opportunities in this business.

Jamaica, which has hotel and beach spa infrastructure, attracts nearly 4.5 million visitors each year, who purchase different types of items, among which are personal care products, according to a report by the Costa Rican Foreign Trade Promotion Agency.

The study specifies that "... visitors demand personal care products that reflect tropical attributes with quality or presentation standards, oriented to a tourist profile with origin in the U.S. and Canada (82%).

On the other hand, the beauty and esthetic services, concentrated in the capital, which are supplied by some of the same local distributors as the tourist channel, and which seek to position options of greater added value.

In both channels, they are identified by tropical ingredients, such as coconut, ginger, aloe and coffee, which are compatible with the profile of Costa Rica's offer, which can explore income as a supplier in specific segments of perfumes and toilet water (4.4 million in imports), depilatories and cosmetic preparations ($4.1 million), space fragrances ($2.8 million), liquids/skin creams ($2.1 million)
