Panamanian Geisha Coffee and its Competitors

Panamanian producers of the geisha variety have stated that competition has increased since countries such as Costa Rica, Mexico and Colombia entered this market segment.

Friday, January 23, 2015

In the past eight years Panama come to be seen as the sole producer and exporter worldwide of the geisha variety, with exports reaching between 8000 and 10,000 hundredweight per year and with up to 1000 hundredweight selling locally at a good price. However, the recent entry of other countries in this market threatens the dominance of Panamanian geisha. Nevertheless, "... experts in the field say that so far no one matches the quality of the Panamanian grain."

Wilford Lamastus, from the Specialty Coffee Association of Panama, told Laestrella.com.pa that "... The country has achieved its position: We are the only one to offer approximately eight years of experience and a specialty coffee of very high quality, because our coffee trees have matured. We sell at a higher price than our neighbors, but eventually prices will go down, because the selling price depends on the variety and the drying process. "

"... Besides Geisha, other varieties of fine coffee are also cultivated such as Pacamara, Catuai, Caturra, Typica and Bourbon. Producing a hectare of gourmet coffee costs $2,000 in the first year, because of the cost of land preparation, seed and fertilizer, among other things. After that, another $2,000 a year is required for maintenance. "
