Panama to Issue $1 billion in Local Market

Authorization has been given to the Ministry of Finance to issue securities on the local stock market for an amount up to $1 billion to finance part of the 2015 budget.

From a statement issued by the Government of Panama:

The Cabinet has endorsed the decree authorizing one or more issues of Securities of the State and their placement in the local capital market for an amount up to $1 billion in order to partially finance the resource requirements of the General State Budget for the fiscal year 2015 and other fiscal years and for the execution of liability management operations.

This initiative seeks to reduce refinancing risk of the Republic in the short and medium term, in addition to paying costs, fees and expenses associated with those emissions authorized by this Cabinet Decree.

The global bond with a coupon of 4.5% maturing in 2047 was issued on the international market, where it received offers for more than $4 billion.

The scandal generated from the leaked information about the firm Mossack Fonseca, "Panama Papers", and the questions about the lack of financial transparency that arose afterwards, do not seem to have affected the attractiveness of the stock market for providing finance to companies through the issuance of securities.

Panama: Government Abandons Stock Exchange

An announcement has been made that in the short-term auctions of securities by Panamanian State will no longer be made in the local market and instead will be carried out through the Bloomberg platform.

Given the lack of investment in technology on the part of Panama stock exchange, the government has announced that it will begin making the auctions using the Bloomberg platform.

Panama Sells Bonds Worth $1.25 billion

September 2014

The government sold government 10 year term bonds for $1.25 billion on the international market at 4%, the lowest interest rate in the list of international issues placed by the country.  

From a statement issued by the Ministry of Finance and Economy of Panama:

Panama launched (on September 15, 2014), in the international market, a successful issuance of global bonds for $1,250 million, which exceeded expectations, having demand of more than six times the initial offer, and obtaining the lowest coupon in the country's history.
