Panama hopes to build refinery

Panama is hoping to seal the deal with Qatar and Occidental Petroleum (Oxy) before the end of 2008 to build a refiner.

Qatar and Occidental Petroleum have until 31 December 2008 to present the final version of the project and to make a decision, according to the stipulations of the Memorandum of Understanding signed in May 2007 between the governments of Panama and Qatar, said the Minister of Trade, Carmen Gisela Vergara.

The Chinese group CAMC Engineering Co., Ltd. (CAMCE) signed a memorandum of understanding for a joint venture with Alba de Nicaragua SA (Albanisa) – a Venezuelan oil importing company, to build the first phase of a refinery in Nicaragua, which will be called " El Supremo Sueño de Bolívar” (The Supreme Dream of Bolivar).

Mega Refinery in Baru, Panama?

A group of investors are interested in building an $8 billion refinery in the Baru area.

Minister of Trade and Industry, Ricardo Quijano, said that a memorandum of understanding, outlining the projects details, would be signed off in the next few weeks.

The proposed refinery would be capable of processing about 400,000 barrels of crude oil daily, and would be accompanied by a logistics center and a tourist resort.

Qatar Refinery Project Brought Up Again

Negotiation between Panama, Qatar Petroleum and Occidental Petroleum for the construction of a $8 billion refinery will restart in September.

Qatar Petroleum and Occidental Petroleum had until December 2008 to present the final study for the refinery, which was first negotiated in May 2007.

Torrijos seeks investment in Emirates

Martín Torrijos, the president of Panama, made a brief visit to the United Arab Emirates in an effort to boost trade and economic cooperation.

After visiting Qatar, Torrijos flew into Abu Dhabi, where he met with the heir to the throne, Sheikh Mohamad bin Zayed al Nahiyan. The two men were reported to have discussed bilateral cooperation in culture, tourism and trade.
