Panama and Cuba Extend Reach of Commercial Agreement

With the modifications negotiated for Partial Scope Agreement Panama will obtain new preferences for 73 tariff lines and improvements in 31 lines, related to agricultural and industrial products.

From a statement issued by the Ministry of Commerce and Industry of Panama (ICIM):

The Minister of Trade and Industry, Meliton Arrocha, expressed his satisfaction at the completion of negotiations of the First Protocol Amending the Partial Scope Agreement with the Republic of Cuba, at the formal signing ceremony to be held in Havana, Cuba, November 7.

According to the Head of Trade and Industry, Panama undertook to negotiate a broadening and deepening of existing Partial Scope Agreement between the two countries, in order to give more impetus to the trade and economic relationships between the two countries, as well as expanding access to the Cuban market for Panamanian products.

Panama and Cuba have signed a Framework of Understanding for the Extension of the Partial Scope Agreement between both countries.

The Minister of Commerce and Industry from Panama, Ricardo Quijano signed with the Minister of Foreign Trade and Foreign Investment in Cuba, Rodrigo Malmierca, a Framework of Understanding for the Extension of the Partial Scope Agreement between both countries.

Panama - Cuba Trade Agreement Comes into Effect

Pork and Sea products are some of the products that Panama will export to Cuba tariff-free.

The announcement was made by the Commerce and Industries Ministry of Panama (MICI).

Local newspaper Laestrella.com.pa lists some other products included in the agreement: "sausages, toilet paper, paper boxes, cartons, juice ,..., freezers, trucks, roof profiles and notebooks".

Panama and Cuba begin FTA negotiations

October 2008

On Tuesday, Panama and Cuba started the first round of negotiation for partial trade agreements between the two nations.

Vice minister of Foreign Trade, Severo Sousa said that "the idea of entering into partial agreements is based on the interest of pushing for the export of a limited number of goods in which the trading partner is interested in."
