Panama and Colombia to Negotiate FTA

After an initial exploratory round, both countries agreed to negotiate a Free Trade Agreement.

The commerce vice ministers from both countries will meet to establish schedules, action plans and negotiating tables.

Luis Guillermo Plata, Colombian Commerce Minister, told Prensa.com: "We will engage in an integral, complete negotiation, which includes goods and services deemed of interest by each country. We will take into consideration the economies of both countries".

The countries concluded their second negotiation round for a Free Trade Agreement between them; most of what’s left are “complex” topics, such as financial services.

Luis Guillermo Plata, Colombia’s Commerce Ministry, highlighted the negotiation’s progress.

“Diana Salazar, Panama’s head negotiator, agreed with Plata, remarking that significant progress was made in the second round, and acknowledged that ‘sensitive’ topics are to be discussed next”, reported Prensa.com.

The first negotiation round for a Free Trade Agreement between both countries will take place in the Panamanian capital, between March 15 and 19.

This was reported by Colombia’s Commerce Minister, Luis Guillermo Plata, who added that a second round has already been scheduled for April 12-16 in Bogotá.

The second exploratory meeting for a Free Trade Agreement between Panama and Colombia is taking place in Panama City.

Ministers from both countries expect to conclude the exploratory process, defining the basis for a FTA between both countries.

“In this meeting, the Panamanian delegation will exchange with its Colombian counterpart commercial and economic policies”.
