According to figures from the Livestock Survey, prepared by the National Institute of Statistics and Census (INEC), as of September 2017 there were 1.5 million cattle, 398 thousand pigs and 25.4 million hens and young chickens.

The report indicates that the provinces with the greatest contribution to the cattle herd in the period under study were Chiriquí, with 316,600 head of cattle, representing 20.8%, Veraguas with 239,000 and equivalent to 15.7% of the total and Los Santos, with 216,700, 14.2%.

Regarding pigs, the largest contributions were from the provinces of Los Santos, with 97,600 pigs, Chiriquí with 61,900 and Veraguas, with 48,200, covering 52% of pigs in the country.

In the case of hens, the provinces that recorded the largest stocks were: Western Panama with 10,566,000 heads, Panama with 5,487,900 and Veraguas, with 3,495,900, i.e. 41.5%, 21.6% and 13.7%, respectively, corresponding to 76.9% of the poultry existing in the nation.

Beef Slaughtering Up 6% in 2019

January 2020

Between 2018 and 2019, the number of cattle slaughtered in Panama increased 6%, while the number of pigs slaughtered decreased 9%.

According to the figures of the General Comptroller of the Republic of Panama, 341,188 heads of cattle were slaughtered last year, a figure higher than the 323,289 reported in 2018.

The 52% of the total cattle registered in the country corresponds to animals for meat production, 16% to dairy cattle and 31% for double purpose.

The National Agricultural Survey (ENA 2017), carried out by the National Institute of Statistics and Censuses (INEC), details that among the main results was found that the country has 1,497,551 head of cattle.

Panama: Figures on Cattle Slaughter

September 2018

Between January and August 2018 and the same period in 2017, the number of slaughtered cattle remained unchanged, while figures for pork slaughter increased by 11%.

According to the latest report from the Comptroller General of the Republic of Panama in the first eight months of the year, 215,854 heads of cattle were slaughtered, a figure similar to the 215,026 reported in the same period in 2017.

Increase in Pork Slaughter in Panama

June 2018

In Panama, between January and May of this year, the slaughter of 231 thousand head of pigs was recorded, 10% more than was reported in the same period in 2017.

The most recent figures for the slaughter of cattle produced by the Comptroller General of the Republic, show that during the first five months of 2018 and the same period in 2017 a decrease of 1% was registered, falling from 134,000 to 132,000 heads.
