Panama: Public Debt Up 7%

As of January 31, 2018, the total balance of the Panamanian government debt totaled $23.384 billion, 7% more than was registered at the end of the same month in 2017.

According to data from the Ministry of Economy and Finance, between January 2017 and 2018, public debt rose from $21,852 million to $23,384 million, which is explained by growth of both external and domestic debt, which increased in equal proportion.

Between January 2017 and the same month of 2018, external public debt grew from $17.178 billion to $18.371 million, and domestic public debt rose from $4.674 million to $5.012 billion, representing increases of 7% for both cases.

Regarding monthly variation of the total public debt registered between December 2017 and January 2018, official figures report that there was a increase of less than 1%, as the amount grew from $23.373 million to $23.387 million.

During the first six months of this year Panama's public debt grew by 3.6% in six months, rising from $23.384 billion in January to $24.233 billion at the end of June.

According to figures from the Ministry of Economy and Finance in Panama, in the first four months of the year, debt has also reported an increase, rising from $23.373 billion recorded at the beginning of January to $24.8 billion computed at the end of April, which represents a 6% increase.
