Panama: Prison Construction Resumes

Authorization has been given to the company Consortium Quality and Associates SA to resume in July works at the prison in the province of Chiriqui, after having been stalled for a year because of debts owed to contractors.

The work, valued at $18 million, was awarded to the consortium Quality y Asociados SA in late 2012, but was halted in April last year due to differences between the builder and authorities.

Panamaamerica.com.pa reports that "... an addendum of time is being negotiated with the company responsible for the work in order to complete the project, which will resolve the problem of overcrowding currently seen in the public jail of David where there 1,200 detainees. "
