Panama Ports: Bulk Material Handling Up 42%

Cargo movement at ports rose only 10%, because other items such as containers and general cargo registered decreases.

Container cargo decreased 10.5% between January and May 2009 when compared to the same period of 2008, the largest drop among all port sectors. General cargo and 20 feet container movement also decreased, 3.3% and 3.7% respectively.

From Prensa.com: "The reduction in container cargo movement coincides with Panama Canal usage projections, expecting a decrease of up to 5% in 2009".

Between January and October 2016, the movement of 5.1 million containers, measured in TEUs, was recorded, 11.8% less than in the same period in 2015.

In units, 3.1 million containers were moved through Panamanian ports in the first ten months of 2016, 11% less than in the same period in 2015.

Activity in Panamanian Ports Recovers

In the first quarter of 2014 cargo movement went up by 6.8% compared to the same period of 2013, after almost two years of decline.  

Capital.com.pa reports that " ... the Panamanian Atlantic ports which are Colon Container Terminal (CCT) , Manzanillo International Terminal (MIT) and Christobal, operated by the Panama Ports Company (PPC), a member of the HPH Group, moved 501,747 containers in total, putting them in second place in the regional ranking for 2014 " ... behind the Port of Santos, Brazil.

Traffic in Panama's Ports Down 10%

The Panamanian port system saw a decrease from 2,325,000 TEUs in the first quarter of 2012 to 2,079,000 TEUs in the same period of 2013.

"The decline in container cargo movement is attributed to the economic crisis in Europe and the U.S., as well as the fall in trade between the largest South American economies: Venezuela, Colombia and Brazil," noted an article in Prensa.com .

In the first four months of the year, cargo turnover at ports in the country increased by 12% compared to the same period in 2010

The improvement in global economic activity is being reflected in the country’s port activities, which have shown the highest increase in the last five years.
