Panama: Plans for Vehicle Bridge for $25 million

The Ministry of Public Works has announced the construction of a bridge to connect Avenida Santa Elena, the Cincuentenario way and the East Coast.

Tuesday, June 11, 2013

Jaime Ford, chief of the MOP disclosed the cost of the project during a presentation on road works to members of the Chamber of Commerce, Industries and Agriculture of Panama. The official explained that they realized the need for this work after they finished the widening of the Cincuentenario road, which required $140 million.

For the moment it is not known which company will build the bridge and the the project has not been tendered, however, it appears to be included in next year's budget. "The main argument given by the authorities to build the bridge is that there is an area which is being developed in Costa del Este, which brings a lot of traffic," noted an article in Prensa.com.

However, members of the Civic Committee for a new Panama Viejo, have applied to build more drains, as the storm drains for the Cincuentenario road are unable to withstand the water at high tide and when there is rain, which has led to fears that it could cause a disaster situation.
