Panama: Hydroelectric Project Chan II Resumed

Currently under public consultation is an environmental impact study for the amendments to Changuinola II hydroelectric project of 223 MW.

After renegotiating the state's participation in the hydroelectric project in January 2015, Empresa de Generación Eléctrica (Egesa) has completed the environmental impact study which includes changes to the original project, to be built in the province of Bocas del Toro.

"... The Changuinola Hydroelectric Project (CHAN II), is a work of investment from the state and private enterprise, which will provide 10% of future energy demand through the construction of a 223.88 MW hydroelectric power station. "

"... EGESA presented the project for the design and detailed major issues presented in the EIA for the construction of CHAN II, thereby complying with the regulations of the Ministry of Environment to perform a work of this magnitude. "

Contract Approved for Hydroelectric Station Chan II

The contract for the construction of the dam was approved by the Comptroller General of the Republic of Panama and is expected to begin before March.

GDF Suez and Enel Green Power did not submit bids and in the end the 50 year concession of Changuinola II went to the only remaining contestant, Oderbrecht Energy.

The financial offer made by the Brazilian company for the 213 MW hydro station exceeded, by $419 million, the cost of the Chan I plant, whose generating capacity is similar and which also uses the Changuinola river as a common source.

Panama: Deadline Extended in Hydroelectric Chan II Tender

At the request of the three companies interested in the 213 MW work, the deadline for submitting bids has been extended until May 6.

May 6 is the date for receipt of the proposals from the three companies interested in the design, financing, construction and operation of the hydroelectric dam Changuinola II, in the province of Bocas del Toro.
