Panama Explores FTA with Cuba

The Ministry of Trade and Industry has announced that it intends to initiate the negotiating process before the end of this year.

Tuesday, October 7, 2008

Cuba holds position 27 of the main destinations for Panamanian Exports, with at least 3 million dollars, according to the figures from the Office of the Comptroller General of the Republic.

The President of the Panamanian Association of Exporters (Apex), Máximo Gallardo, described a future agreement with Cuba as being convenient for the country, even more so when looking to expand the markets.

For the Panamanian Exporters, the island is an interesting market where there is a lot of demand for industrial agricultural products, “Even though it doesn’t appear that way, right now Cuba needs to import a lot of food, after recently experiencing several hurricanes. This is an opportunity that we must take advantage of,” said Gallardo.
