Panama: Economic Activity up 4%

Transport, electricity and trade were the sectors that contributed the most to the 4% year-on-year increase in economic activity up to September.

The General Comptroller reported that the Monthly Index of Economic Activity (IMAE) in the Republic, for January-September 2018, increased by 3.17% compared to the same period in 2017. The monthly yoy variation referred to September 2018 was 3.82% compared to its similar of the previous year.

During January-September, the main categories of economic activity showing positive behavior were: transport, storage and communications, electricity and water, and trade. A positive behavior was observed in commercial activity, mainly in wholesale trade and the Colon Free Zone, the document explains.

Transport and communications services showed a favorable performance, mainly through the Canal of Panama, the container movement of the National Port System TEU and telecommunications. The supply of electricity and water showed positive results because of the increased generation of renewable energy, such as hydropower, wind and solar.

On the other hand, some activities with a negative impact were leisure and entertainment, real estate, construction, and mining and quarrying.

Because of the performance of transport and communications services, during November 2018 Panama reported a 3.5% year on year variation in economic activity.

The Monthly Index of Economic Activity (IMAE) in the Republic, for January-October 2018, increased by 3.14% compared to the same period in 2017. The yoy variation referred up to October 2018 was 2.96%, compared to its equivalent of the previous year, informed the General Comptroller.

Transport, private services and trade were the sectors that accounted for most of the variation in the economic activity index during the beginning of the year.

In the first month of the year, the economy grew by 5.8%, driven mainly by the sectors of fisheries, transport, storage and communications and construction.

The Monthly Economic Activity Index (IMAE) in the Republic, up to January 2015, measured in terms of the original series in 1996, saw prices grow by 5.8% compared to the same period in 2014.
