Panama: Dairy Industry Against Reduced Tariffs

The food and beverage industry has protested over the lowering of import tariffs for evaporated milk powder, mozzarella cheese and cheese for melting.

Friday, October 26, 2012

Prensa.com reports that "Through the Cabinet Decree No. 37 of 9 October 2012, the administration of Ricardo Martinelli reduced the import tariff on evaporated milk from 155% to 30%. Milk powder has been reduced from 50% to 20%, and mozzarella cheese, and other melting cheeses from 30% to 10%. The tariff adjustment will affect the entire value chain of the industry. Not only will processors and distributors be harmed with these tariffs, but also small farmers who supply to the dairy industry with raw materials. "

"In general, companies are not so much opposed to the reduction in tariffs, as to how fast they have been applied and the fact that it was without consultation with the Government."
