Panama: Changes to Widening of Southern Corridor

Filling in of the maritime seabed which had been planned to be carried out in front of Atlapa will no longer be done and an evaluation is being made of the construction of a viaduct leading up to the coastal strip, widening the road to four lanes from Costa del Este to Punta Pacifica.

The new design of the road will change the real estate landscape of the area, not only because now there will not be land fills in front of Atlapa, where it was expected that apartment blocks were to be built, but because new opportunities for development in the area will be generated. Examples are real estate projects being developed in Santa Maria and the industrial parks of Costa del Este.

Diego Hernandez, regional manager of the company Ingenieros Civiles Asociados (ICA), told Prensa.com that "... On instruction from the Ministry of Public Works new traffic studies are being made and technical analysis carried out to increase capacity, improving road safety ... For example, he mentioned that in addition to the widening to four lanes from Costa del Este to Punta Pacifica and the elevated viaduct from Atlapa to Balboa Avenue a request has been made to incorporate in the future infrastructure for the Metro Bus along the main junctions. While the path from the village of Tocumen to Costa del Este would be expanded to three lanes in both directions. "

"... Another concern of the authorities and the ICA, which will probably undertake the works, is that the Domingo Diaz route will be closed when the second Metro line is started, therefore both corridors will be needed in their entirety so that cars can circulate properly in the capital city. "
