Panama Bans Weapon Imports

The country banned imports until the new law to possess and carry weapons is approved.

The project will be discussed at the National Assembly during the next period.

The Minister of Public Security, José Raúl Mulino, told Panama America: "It is a decision by the State, for state security, and is, for now, an indefinite extension. We will also look into the black market because many of legal weapons entering the country become illegal."

Opposition to Ban on Imports of Legal Weapons

December 2015

The ban in force since 2010, affects companies in the industry and has not achieved its purpose of reducing the use of firearms by criminals.

Panama: Ban on Arms Imports Maintained

July 2015

The government has announced that the ban on importing firearms will stay in place until August 6, 2015.

From a resolution of the Ministry of Public Security:

It is resolved:

To extend the suspension of the import of weapons allowed in the country by companies duly authorized to apply for licenses from the Ministry for importing such goods. State Security and the security services of state institutions are excepted.

Panama: Another Six Months of Weapon Import Ban

November 2014

An announcement has been made of a new regulation for the import and sale of weapons while at the same time a ban on imports has been extended for six months.  

The regulation being prepared aims to implement new measures such as: understanding what caliber of weapons should be restrictd, the size of the suppliers that may be used, the type of psychological tests to be applied to people, and revocation of permits already issued, among other things.

Panama: Arms Possession Regulations

September 2010

Two bills have been presented to restrict the possession of firearms and regulate private security firms.

The proposed laws were presented by the Public Security Minister, Alejandro Garúz.
