AES Panama is carrying out tests in order to start connecting the barge thermoelectric generation that is located in Colon, near the Bahia Las Minas substation, to the electrical system.

La Estrella de Mar 1 barge will supply electricity which is roughly equivalent to 5% of the demand in the country.

Leopoldo Perez, director of corporate affairs at AES, told Laestrella.com.pa that "... The Government, through the Electricity Generation Company (Egesa), signed a power and energy contract for five years with AES Panama for the acquisition, transportation, installation, operation and maintenance of a barge emergency thermoelectric generation. "

"... The project, with an investment of $8 million- included the upgrading of more than 62 kilometers of transmission line of 115 kilowatts (lines 1, 2, 3 and 4), owned by the Electricity Transmission Company (ETESA ). This increased transmission capacity by 46% allowing for operation of other thermal generators in 2015. "
