Panama: 5 New Banks Authorized to Operate

In the first half of the year the Banking Superintendence (SBP) has authorized 5 banking institutions to operate in the country.

These are “Banca Privada D’Andorra S.A.”, “Banco Prival, S. A.”, “Banco Lafise Panamá, S. A.”, “Banco Internacional de Perú, S. A.” and “Banco La Hipotecaria, S. A.”.

“The SBP is currently considering if it grants a general banking license to Uni Bank & Trust Inc, which was granted a temporary permit on June 24th, 2010”, reported Laestrella.com.pa.

Barriers to 670 MW Gas Plant

According to the Panama Canal Authority, NG Power only has permission to build a 130 MW plant, so it will have to go through a new procedure if it expects to develop the 670 MW plant, as planned from the beginning.

The permit requested by Panama NG Power and approved by the Canal Board in 2011, is for two generators of up to 45 MW each and a third steam generator of up to 40 MW, which together total 130 MW.

Panama: Banca Privada D'Andorra Intervention Extended

November 2015

For the second time a 90 day extension has been approved for the reorganization of Banca Privada d'Andorra, which has been operated by the superintendent since March 2015.

Through Resolution SBP-0161-2015 of October 23, 2015, the ordering of a period of reorganization BANCA PRIVADA D´ANDORRA (PANAMÁ), S.A.

New Banks in Panama

February 2011

In 2010, nine new banks entered the banking sector in Panama.

Of these, four are local private banks, three have international license and two are foreign banking entities.

The new operations launched are Banco Lafise Panama (March 10), Bank of Nova Soctia (Panama) SA (Oct 10) Prival Bank (March 10), Balboa Bank & Trust Corp (May 10) Banco La Hipotecaria (June-October), Uni Baak & Trust Inc.

New Banks Arrive in Panama

In the first six months of 2010, the Panamanian Banking Regulator (SBP) granted permits to six new operators.

The Panamanian Banking Regulator is now studying a further seven requests for upcoming approval.

"Foreign and mixed groups such as Banco Prival, Banca Privada D’Andorra, Banco Lafise Panamá, Banco Internacional de Perú and Banco La Hipotecaria have seen potential in the country," writes Capitales.com.
