Panama: Cruise Tourism Up 9%

Up to November last year, 301,149 tourists arrived on cruise ships at Panamanian ports, 9.2 % more than in the same month in 2012.

Statistics from the Tourism Authority of Panama (ATP) reveal that between January and November 2013, 301,149 tourists arrived in the country on cruises, 25,470 visitors more than in the same period in 2012, an increase of 9.2%. This sector contributed $45 million to the national economy in that period.

Ports in Panama receive approximately 135 cruises year. " ... Every passenger who disembarks at a port spends about $125 a day," according to experts at the Florida Caribbean Cruises Association (FCCA) .

"This month the arrival of more than 21 of these large boats full of tourists are expected. The Port of Columbus 2000 has the most activity, as it will have 19 ships, located at the entrance of the Canal and on the banks of the city of Colon. "

The country is not on the cruise ship's route map for next season, leaving only Pullmantur using Colon 2000 as a home port.

Since December 2008, 52 thousand cruise ship passengers have boarded at the terminal in Colón Port 2000; 14 thousand Panamanians and the rest mostly Colombians, Mexicans, Costa Ricans and Venezuelans.
