Panama: Slight Economic Slowdown

After a 3.7% year-on-year increase in economic activity in February, the reported growth in March was only 2.9%.

Tuesday, May 21, 2019

The Monthly Index of Economic Activity (IMAE) grew by 3.41% for the January-March 2019 period, compared to the same period in 2018. The monthly year on year variation referred up to March 2019 was 2.96%, compared to its similar of the previous year, informed the General Comptroller of the Republic.

The document explains that "... Among the categories of economic activity presenting a favorable performance were: transportation, storage and communications, electricity and water, public administration and financial intermediation.

Transport and communications services recorded positive performance, thanks to the performance of the Panama Canal, the movement of containers from the National Port System in TEU; likewise, telecommunications and international passenger transport by air. The category of electricity and water supply, in its production, showed positive results because of the greater generation of thermal energy and the contribution presented by the new generation of energy from natural gas.

Other activities showing slower growth were trade, construction, mining and quarrying, agriculture and the provision of entertainment and leisure services.
