Panama: Consumption of Dairy Foods and Beverages Growing

In 2014 average household spending on soft drinks, beers and soft drinks increased by 17%, while that of dairy products grew by 8%.

From a statement issued by the Foreign Trade Promotion Office of Costa Rica:

The purchasing power of the population of Panama has been strengthened in recent years, thanks to the rapid economic growth of this country, which according to World Bank figures, has an annual per capita income of over $10,000.

This country is recognized as one of the most developed markets in Central America, with huge shopping malls, an international banking center, notable residential and hotel and real estate developments and the availability of a logistics center in the process of expansion.

People are consuming more and more from supermarkets, and not only to resupply their food stocks, they also looking for occasional and replacement products, a segment which has strengthened the position of supermarkets as a sales channel.

Besides selling the beer brands Suprema and Regia Extra, the group Industrias La Constancia is preparing to also sell this year the business of distributing Coca Cola brand drinks.

The sale of the Coca Cola distribution business and its accompanying brands is due to a decision by The Coca Cola Company to secede from AB InBev, which despite being its partner in several countries, as in the case of El Salvador, also sells drinks under the Pepsi brand.

With the purchase of this plant the Costa Rican Cooperativa de Leche Dos Pinos is seeking to venture into the regional market of drinks such as fruit juices, soft drinks, teas and bottled water.

Five Guatemalan companies exporting fruit juices have asked the government for support to demand that Panama lift the suspension on imports of their products.

Boom Energy Drinks Continue in U.S.

January 2014

The consumption of energy drinks and "Ready to Drink" coffee increased by 14.3% and 9.5%, respectively.

During the period 2011-12 energy drinks increased sales more than any other segments with 14.3%, followed by ready to drink (RTD) coffee with 9.5 %, bottled water 5.8 % and RTD tea with 9%.
