Guatemala, Main Seller
In 2020, Guatemala was the largest exporter of palm oil in the region, selling $471 million, followed by Honduras with $338 million, Costa Rica with $148 million, Panama with $29 million, Nicaragua with $2 million and El Salvador with $500 thousand.

During the year, Panama, Costa Rica, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua increased their sales in year-on-year terms by 69%, 34%, 20%, 18% and 11%, in that order. In the case of El Salvador, exports decreased by 5%, respectively.

Mexico, Main Buyer
Last year, 29% of the value exported from Central America was destined for the Netherlands, 21% for Mexico, 16% for Spain and 11% for Italy.

Regional Business Rising
Between 2019 and 2020, the exported value of palm oil recorded an increase of 22%, rising from $811 million to $987 million.

In the case of traded volume, it decreased by 4% for the periods under analysis, going from 1.581 million tons in 2019 to 1.510 million tons in 2020.

Palm Oil: Sales to Mexico Grow at 22%

During the first seven months of 2020, exports of palm oil and its derivatives from Central America to Mexican companies totaled $138 million, 22% more than the same period in 2019.

Palm Oil: Export Price Not Improving

August 2019

In recent years, the average price of palm oil exports from Central America has reported a downward trend, from $1.13 per kilo in May 2012 to $0.53 per kilo in March 2019.
