Palm Oil: Regional Sales Up 12%

From January to September 2020 exports from Central America of palm oil and its fractions totaled $648 million, an amount that exceeds by 12% what was reported in the same period of 2019.

Guatemala, Main Seller
In the first nine months of 2020 Guatemala was the largest exporter of palm oil in the region, selling $303 million, followed by Honduras with $214 million, Costa Rica with $110 million, Panama with $21 million, Nicaragua with $1 million and El Salvador with $200 thousand.

During the period in question, Panama, Costa Rica, Guatemala and Honduras increased their sales in year-on-year terms by 64%, 22%, 10% and 8%, in that order. Nicaragua and El Salvador decreased their exports by 25% and 27%, respectively.

Mexico, Main Buyer
From January to September 2020, 24% of the value exported from Central America was destined for the Netherlands, 23% for Mexico, 18% for Spain and 9% for Italy.

Rise in Regional Business
Between January and September 2019 and the same period in 2020, the exported value of palm oil registered an increase of 12%, rising from $580 million to $648 million.

In the case of traded volume, it decreased by 11% for the periods under analysis, going from 1.16 million tons in 2019 to 1.03 million tons in 2020.

Palm Oil: Price Falls Again

February 2019

Between February 2016 and March 2017, the average price of palm oil exports from Central America increased from $0.54 to $0.74 per kilo, however, in September 2018 the kilo of the product was resold at $0.54.

Palm oil: More Business with Spain

December 2018

During the first six months of the year, palm oil sales from Central America reached $383 million, and exports to Spain increased 232% with respect to the first half of 2017.
