Palm Oil: Business with Spain Still Rising

During the first half of 2019, exports from Central America of palm oil and its fractions reached $333 million, and sales to companies in Spain increased by 93% compared to the same period in 2018.

Guatemala, Main Seller
In the first six months of 2019, Guatemala was the largest exporter of palm oil in the region, selling $158 million, followed by Honduras with $107 million, Costa Rica with $60 million, Panama with $7 million, Nicaragua with $0.8 million and El Salvador with $0.1 million.

Mexico, Top Buyer
From January to June 2019, 23% of the value exported from Central America was destined for Mexico, 21% for the Netherlands, 20% for Spain and 8% for Germany.

Regional Business Downwards
Between January and June 2018 and the same period in 2019, the value of palm oil exports recorded a 13% decrease, falling from $383 million to $333 million.

Price Falls Again
After the period from February 2016 to March 2017, the average price of Central American exports reported a 37% increase, rising from $0.54 per kilo to $0.74 per kilo, this trend was reversed, dropping from $0.70 per kilo in April 2017 to $0.50 per kilo in June 2019.

Between February 2016 and March 2017, the average price of palm oil exports from Central America increased from $0.54 to $0.74 per kilo, however, in September 2018 the kilo of the product was resold at $0.54.

Palm oil: More Business with Spain

December 2018

During the first six months of the year, palm oil sales from Central America reached $383 million, and exports to Spain increased 232% with respect to the first half of 2017.
