Paint and Varnish Trade Falls 30%

In the first six months of 2020, trade of paints and varnishes between Central American countries amounted to $43 million, an amount that is 30% lower than that recorded in the same period of 2019.

Intra-regional Trade Still on the Rise
Between January and June 2019 and the same period in 2020, trade in paints and varnishes between Central American countries registered a 30% drop, going from $62 million to $43 million.

The year-on-year drop recorded in transactions in the first half of 2020, is contrary to the behavior reported in the same period of 2019, when a 4% increase was recorded.

Costa Rica, Main Supplier
From January to June 2020 the main exporter of paints and varnishes in Central America continued to be Costa Rica with $17 million, followed by Guatemala, with $13 million, El Salvador, with $12 million, Nicaragua with $1 million, and Honduras with $200 thousand. Panama did not record significant sales.

When analyzing the destination of sales by Costa Rican companies, the figures show that 25% of total exports were purchased by Honduran companies, 23% by Panamanians, 22% by Guatemalans, 19% by Nicaraguans and 10% by Salvadorans.

Main Intra-Regional Importer
For the months in question last year, Honduras was the main buyer of paints and varnishes from other Central American countries, importing $11 million, of which $4.3 million was purchased from Costa Rica, $3.5 million from Guatemala, $2.8 million from El Salvador and $200,000 from Guatemala.
