Paint and Varnish Trade Down 10% in 2020

Last year, trade in paints and varnishes between Central American countries amounted to $123 million, which is 10% lower than in 2019, a drop that was reported in the context of the economic crisis resulting from the Covid-19 outbreak.

Intraregional Trade Downward
Between 2019 and 2020, trade in paints and varnishes between Central American countries registered a 10% drop, going from $137 million to $123 million.

The year-on-year decline recorded in transactions during 2020 is in contrast to the behavior reported in 2019, when a 7% increase was recorded.

Costa Rica, Main Supplier
During 2020 the main exporter of paints and varnishes in Central America continued to be Costa Rica with $48 million, followed by Guatemala, with $38 million, El Salvador, with $32 million, Nicaragua with $3 million, Panama with $900 thousand and Honduras with $700 thousand.

When analyzing the destination of sales by Costa Rican companies, the figures show that 27% of total exports were purchased by Honduran companies, 25% by Panamanians, 20% by Guatemalans, 18% by Nicaraguans and 10% by Salvadorans.

Main Intra-Regional Importer
For the months in question last year, Honduras was the main buyer of paints and varnishes to the other Central American countries, importing $32 million of which $13 million was bought from Costa Rica, $10 million from Guatemala, $8 million from El Salvador, $300 thousand from Nicaragua and $100 thousand from Guatemala.
