Optical Fiber Cables: Regional Purchases Fall 33%

After imports of fiber optic cables in Central America fell 6% in 2018 compared to 2017, the first quarter of 2019 recorded a 33% year-on-year decline.

Costa Rica, Main Importer
In the first three months of 2019, the main buyer in the region was Costa Rica, with $4.6 million, followed by Honduras, with $1.8 million, Guatemala, with $1.7 million, El Salvador, with $1.3 million, Panama, with $900,000 and Nicaragua, with $500,000.

Figures of the Regional Business
Between the first quarter of 2018 and the same period of 2019, the value of imported fiber optic cables in Central America decreased by $5 million, dropping from $16.2 million to $10.8 million.

For the periods concerned, purchases from companies in China decreased significantly, from $5.6 million to $3.3 million.

China, the Most Important Supplier
From January to March of this year, 31% of the value imported into the region came from China, 21% from the U.S., 21% from Mexico and 8% from Spain.

China is the market of origin of imports that has grown the most for the period in question of the last eight years, as in 2012 represented 5% of total purchases in Central America, and in 2019 that proportion rose to 31%.

In the first nine months of 2018, Central American countries imported $399 million in electrical wires and cables, and 50% were bought by companies in Costa Rica and Guatemala.
